Meet the Founder

Hi, I’m Sanchez, founder of Roots & Play.

A mixed heritage mum of 2 and former educator.

Roots & Play was created from a passion for helping children feel connected, represented and proud of their culture through meaningful play and learning. As a brand, we aim to positively impact children of all races to celebrate our cultural differences and similarities to create a sense of pride across our communities.

Research shows that positive representation in
childhood is crucial in developing positive self-identity, building confidence, breaking stereotypes, promoting inclusivity and inspiring children to achieve and succeed.

Why I Created Roots & Play

After nearly twenty years of working within the UK education system, I saw first-hand how limited culturally inclusive resources were for children. Particularly for those from Black and mixed heritage backgrounds. I wanted to create something different, resources that felt joyful, accessible, culturally rich and easy for families to use at home or school.

Learning Through Play & Culture

Through my own personal experience, I understand how powerful positive representation can be in childhood. The activities, printables and learning experiences inside Roots & Play are designed to help children explore and celebrate Caribbean and African culture in a fun and dynamic way.

Everything is created with busy families in mind, simple, low-prep activities that encourage meaningful learning without adding pressure to parents.

My Background in Education

I have a background in Education & Psychology, a Master’s degree in Education Practice, a PGCE in Primary Education and extensive experience as a social, emotional, mental health practitioner for children and their families within Leicester City. I’ve spent many years studying how children learn best. Roots & Play brings together my educational experience, cultural heritage and love for creative learning.

What started with our Caribbean and West African Food Flashcards has grown into a wider collection of printable resources, themed activity packs and cultural learning materials designed to support families, schools, home schoolers, nurseries and educators.

Community & Connection

Alongside creating resources, I’ve also delivered community workshops focused on cultural learning, creative play and family connection, with plans to continue expanding Roots & Play through more community-based projects and collaborations in the future.

Our Mission

My goal is simple:to help children explore culture in a way that feels playful, inclusive, creative and memorable. All while helping families create moments of connection together.
