Celebrating Our Feature in the Black Foster Care Alliance Magazine!
At Roots and Play, we believe that every child deserves to feel seen, valued and understood, especially those navigating the foster care system. For children placed in transracial foster care, cultural identity can be one of the most crucial, yet overlooked, aspects of their well-being. That’s why our mission includes helping foster carers build strong, culturally aware connections with the children they support.
Why Cultural Identity Matters in Foster Care
For children of colour placed with foster carers of different racial or cultural backgrounds, the loss of cultural continuity can be deeply unsettling. It impacts not only how they see themselves but how they feel they belong in the world around them. This is particularly true for Black children in foster care, who often face a lack of representation and understanding of their heritage in daily caregiving.
Research and experience both tell us that children thrive when their cultural identity is recognised and celebrated. At Roots and Play, our inclusive products support this important work because we know that when carers are equipped with the right resources, everyone benefits.
Roots and Play: Educational Tools That Bridge the Gap
Our diverse educational flashcards are designed to spark conversations, build trust and nurture a child’s sense of self. These aren't just learning tools, they’re bridges to understanding. They empower foster carers with practical ways to affirm a child’s background through fun and engaging play.
Whether used during playtime, learning sessions or quiet one-on-one moments, our multicultural learning materials help deepen bonds and foster cultural empathy.
